Tuesday 13 May, 5.30 to 7.15, followed by wine reception

Leonard Wolfson Auditorium, Wolfson College, Linton Road, Oxford OX2 6UD

Hermione Lee discusses with the author, Jean Strouse, the event of Sargent being commissioned to paint twelve portraits of the Wertheimer family: how new it was for a family of Jews to appear alongside the Anglo-Saxon aristocrats and dignitaries painted by earlier masters, symbolising the declining fortunes of the British aristocracy and the dramatic rise of new power and wealth on both sides of the Atlantic.
